The other day I was listening to a mellow indie channel on iTunes radio and the song "A Drop In The Ocean" came on. The song I knew, the name of the artist, Ron Pope, didn't even ring a bell with me. I forgot how much I loved that song. It prompted me to search if he had any new music. Sure enough he had a single released in August 2013, "Lick My Wounds." (He also released an album titled "Calling Off The Dogs" January 6, 2014.)

Now here is where I usually feature the video.  But I hate the video.  I am very well aware that it is highly possible the artist will discover this post and see that I don't like his video. (I've had several artist favorite my tweet mentioning their particular post. Even other artists have contacted me after posting about them. So it's possible. I'm sorry, Ron.) It's like he took all the cheesy elements from every lame 80s video and put them all in one. I'm all for goofy/satire type of videos (i.e. Foo Fighters "Learning to Fly") but it has to work for the song. Here it does not. The video almost ruins the song for me. To me the song sounds sexy, and the lyrics talk about a guy who meets this girl who just blows him away.  My favorite lyric, "And if looks could kill she would stop your heart. Not just a girl but a work of art" So hot. I even read an interview with American Songwriter where he talks about "Lick My Wounds" and says,
That song became the starting point for my new album. The record follows two people from the first instant they lay eyes on each other through the very last. ‘Lick My Wounds’ is about that first moment when you see a stranger across the room, where it’s all possibility and hope. I’d never written a song about that feeling before, so it was exciting when this one came out well.
See! It's exactly what you think it's about. How sexy. Something as simple as a look across a room inspired an entire album!

Then we get this video.... Major. Letdown. It feels like a mockery some how.

I'm very well aware that others probably love the video and would tell me to lighten up. Ron Pope has the artistic license to express his song however he sees fit. Maybe he didn't want to take it the classic direction everyone expected? (Where the story in the lyrics is told through the video.)  But I think he's missing out on an opportunity to seduce a world of woman who would eat him up with a spoon if delivered a steamy video full of devouring looks, missed connections and eventually find each other in the end.

Okay.  Enough of me ranting.  I'll show you the video. Only because I know if I don't you'll just go find it anyway.  But do me a favor, play the video with your eyes closed first and just listen to the song.  Then fine, watch the video if you must.

Here you go. Take a bite and enjoy...the song.

Lyrics "Lick My Wounds" by Ron Pope

Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh

She stumbled in through the exit
21 but holds her liquor like a freshman
She don’t ever stay out this late
And when I look at her I can feel my pulse race

And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart
Not just a girl
But a work of art
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves
Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds

Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh

I think the sun’s probably coming up
I don’t want to go home, but they threw us out
And I don’t ever stay out this late
But there’s something happening that made my pulse race

And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart
Not just a girl
But a work of art
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves
Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds

What’s good for me, good for me now
What’s good for me, good for me now
What’s good for me, good for me now
What’s good for me, good for me now

Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh

And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart
Not just a girl
But a work of art
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves
Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds
